Our story · Vinschgau, South Tyrol

Two people, one hay barn, and a valley full of plants.

Moraine is a formulator and a grower working side by side at 1,050 m. We make twelve formulas in small batches, print what’s in them, and keep the bottles coming back.

The lab

A hay barn above the valley floor.

46.69° N · 10.55° E · 1,050 m

Our lab sits in a converted hay barn on a south-facing slope, about 150 meters above the valley floor. The old larch beams are still there.

Under them we fitted a clean room for filling, a formulation bench and a cold store for the herbs Jonas brings up from the plots. The loft, where the hay used to be, is now where we dry flowers.

We make every formula in batches of 40 liters or less. Each batch is checked for stability and microbial quality before it is filled by hand, and its batch number goes on every label.

Small batches mean fresher stock and fewer leftovers. They also mean we sometimes sell out. We’d rather wait for the next batch than keep a warehouse full.

(01)  The founders

A formulator and a grower.

MK

Marta Kofler

Co-founder · Formulator

Marta trained in cosmetic chemistry and spent nine years writing formulas for contract labs in northern Italy, where most briefs started with a price and ended with a fragrance. She came home to the valley to work the other way around: start from the plant, keep the ingredient list short and print the percentages. Today she runs the bench, the stability tests and the batch records, and approves every batch before it is filled.

“If a percentage is worth using, it’s worth printing on the front.”

JW

Jonas Wieser

Co-founder · Grower

Jonas grew up on an apple farm lower down the valley and studied agriculture before trading orchards for herb plots. He runs just over half a hectare of calendula on the valley floor, cuts alpine rose leaves on a neighbor’s slope above the lab, and works with the farms that grow our sea buckthorn and chamomile. He decides when to harvest, dries the flowers in the barn loft and keeps a field diary of every season, poor summers included.

“The plants set the calendar. We just write it down.”

(02)  What we hold to

Four rules we don’t bend.

Print the numbers

Every key ingredient goes on the front of the bottle with its percentage. If we can’t stand behind a number, we don’t use the ingredient.

Refill before recycling

Recycling melts a good bottle down; refilling keeps it working. We build every formula we can around a bottle you keep for years.

Grow close, or say why not

Four of our ten key ingredients grow within 25 km of the lab. For the other six, we tell you where they come from and why we haven’t found a closer source.

Small batches, slow changes

We make 40 liters at a time and change a formula only when we can explain why. New launches are rare, and we’d like to keep it that way.

(03)  Milestones

From trial rows to twelve formulas.

2019

2019

First rows in the ground

Jonas sows trial rows of calendula on his family’s land. Marta starts testing extracts from them on a borrowed bench.

2020

2020

The barn becomes a lab

We convert the hay barn above the plots, fit a clean filling room and make our first 40-liter batch: the Oat Cleansing Milk.

2022

Percentages on the front

Six formulas launch with every key active printed on the label. A pharmacy in Vienna becomes our first stockist.

Refills begin

Aluminum refills arrive for our serums and creams. Every third refill ships with a free return label for the empties.

Nine of twelve

Twelve formulas, nine of them refillable, sold across the EU and in six cities. Our first impact report puts the numbers in one place.
